Zip the lip

Confession:  I have a terrible habit of interrupting people when they speak.  I know I do it.  If you know me, you know I do it.

I will interrupt you to add to your story.  I will interrupt you to correct something you’ve said.  I will interrupt you to go off on a tangent about something else, and quite often, I will interrupt you because you don’t speak fast enough for my brain that is already seventeen steps ahead and I just want to help you move your story along.

It’s a terrible, awful habit and I want to stop.  I hate it when people interrupt me.  I hate it when I catch myself interrupting people, which probably happens a lot less then the actual interrupting.  And then I hate myself for doing it.

I promise that it’s not because I don’t think you’re interesting, or that your story isn’t interesting, or because I don’t value what you have to say.  I do. I truly do.  I just think fast and talk fast and everything for me is fast fast fast and sometimes when your brain and mouth are moving slower than mine, my mouth moves fast and interrupts you before my brain can hold it back and just let you finish.

So if I have ever interrupted you – or if I ever do – (and I probably have, or will), I’m sorry.  I really am sorry.  I’ll try to zip it just a little longer and let you finish.
